In October 2023, shortly after the beginning of the genocide on Gaza, McDonald’s Israel declared its distribution of 100,000+ free meals to IOF soldiers and locals alongside a 50% discount to soldiers and security personnel across the country.
Following global outrage, McDonald’s has attempted to distance itself from this move, claiming it was a private and individual decision, and having its MENA franchisees issue statements in solidarity with Gaza. However in January 2024, McDonald’s Malaysia took legal action against boycott movement BDS Malaysia seeking $1 million in damages, prompting further backlash.
